What is a Warranty?

A warranty is defined as a period of time during which a manufacturer will repair or replace products that are defective because of materials or workmanship, essentially a guarantee of the products' quality. In contrast to consumer goods which generally have a warranty period that ranges from 30 days to 1 year from the date of purchase, tyres typically have a much longer warranty period of anywhere from 4 to 6 years or until the tyre tread wears out. This is because tyres are exposed to a much wider range of harsh conditions and extreme temperatures compared to other consumer products.

A manufacturers' limited warranty is applicable to all tyres sold by Rim Rubber, which cover all conditions that can be reasonably deemed to be within the manufacturers' control, such as workmanship, material quality etc. Additional warranties such as complimentary trial periods or treadwear mileage may also be applicable in certain situations.

In contrast, conditions that are not considered under the manufacturers' control will not be covered under limited tyre warranties. This includes conditions such as poor maintenance, vehicle conditions, damage caused by accidents, driving on flat tyres, or vandalism.

Warranty Duration

This is because tyres are exposed to a much wider range of harsh conditions and extreme temperatures compared to other consumer products.

The limited warranty duration is stated in terms of either months or years from the date of purchase, therefore, warranties commence at the time of purchase for replacement tyres and at the time of delivery for new vehicles.

Proof of ownership or the tyre's in-service date will be established by a new vehicle's registration certificate or the replacement tyre's sales invoice. If there is no proof of purchase, we will utilise the week and year the tyre was manufactured (as identified by the DOT Tyre Identification Number (TIN) branded on the sidewall).

Tyre warranties expire when the original tread is worn down to 2/32" (1.6 mm) of remaining tread. At this time, the tread blocks are worn flush with the treadwear indicator bars.

Uniformity Warranty

There will inevitably be some variation during the manufacturing process, although tyres are built to tight tolerances. This is one reason why tyre balance and internal forces are measured during a tyre's final inspection at the factory.

Note: Due to the final factory inspection, tyre manufacturers will not accept that all four tyres from the same vehicle are out-of-round or responsible for ​vibration. For requests to return all four tyres, the manufacturer will determine that there was no real attempt to identify the true root of the problem.

If the tyre manufacturer determines that a vehicle ride disturbance is caused by workmanship or materials of a new tyre, it will be immediately apparent and should be identified and rectified as soon as practically possible. The responsible tyre must be replaced before the first 1/32" to 2/32" of treadwear or during the first 6 or 12 months of service (depending on the manufacturer).

After this initial period, ride disturbances that occur are linked to road hazard damage or irregular wear stemming from the vehicle's lack of routine maintenance and/or mechanical condition.

Materials & Workmanship Warranty

Tyre Manufacturer's Workmanship and Materials Warranty covers conditions that are within the tyre manufacturers' control, such as quality of workmanship or raw materials.

Usually, during the first year of ownership or 25% of the tyre's treadwear (whichever occurs first), there will be a complimentary exchange for the customer (freight excluded). For the remainder of the warranty period, replacement cost is prorated by crediting the owner for the portion of service not received.
